It’s official the NOAA, or more specifically the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration rings in a new 11-year cycle of heightened solar activity. The new solar cycle is dubbed as Solar Cycle 24. The major climax of this new cycle is predicted to be in 2011 or 2012. Once the solar cycle reaches it’s maximum level you can expect it to bring greater risk of havoc on things like GPS signals, power grids, cell phones, civilian and airline communications, military communications and a whole lot more.

As stated from solar physicist Douglas Biesecker of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, “This sunspot is like the first robin of spring.” This robin has started to hatch early since a major group of solar experts predicted the cycle would most likely begin in March of 2008. The catch to the prediction was that it could occur 6 months before or after the March of 2008 date.

Even though the new spot, named #10,981 has appeared and marks the first sunspot of the new solar cycle NOAA warns it will not officially announce Solar Cycle 24 just yet. NOAA would prefer to see more Solar Cycle 24 spots and disruptions on the sun to officially announce that Solar Cycle 24 is dominant and in control of the sun cycle. It has been stated by officials at NOAA that due to the early appearance of these spots it shows that this could be a very strong solar season with bigger storms and more sunspots than previously monitored sun cycles.

Disruptions due to an increase in the solar cycles geomagnetic storms like Solar Cycle 24 can be serious. In fact, in 1989 an entire power grid that powers Canada’s Quebec province was knocked out by a major solar storm. This happened during what is called the Solar Maximum. If you are interested in this phenomenon which will become most active in 2011 or 2012 check out the documentary called Solarmax.

It is only during strong periods of geomagnetic storms that many things on Earth can be damaged. Normally the earth’s magnetic field protects earth from all of the random emissions put out by the sun during increased activity.

To get more information about the Solar Cycle 24 check out the NOAA’s in depth explanation of the coming solar cycle change here. You’ll find more pictures, video and a detailed analysis of what to expect.
