You’re NOT a social media expert, you idiot
Are you tired of hearing it yet? I sure am. It seems Twitter has fostered an extreme steroid fed bacterial growth of social media experts, social media gurus and super follower magnates. Unfortunately there isn’t much of an antibiotic floating around to separate the experts from the idiots. If you weren’t aware already, most of these experts are just idiots that have found a stool to stand on and shout their garbled rehashed crap they read from TwiTips.com and rewrote it on their own “pretty” blog.
I believe there are five different types of what is perceived to be social media experts. Please note: I’m excluding the idiots above because they’re not experts and they don’t need to be discussed, just ignored.
Type One: Authoritative Expert
This first type of expert has the lucky ability of transferring their authoritative status in their field over into the social media world. Basically, they are a high profile executive, someone famous, someone with a TV show, radio show, have written books and had them published or they were found dancing to some stupid song on YouTube. This is an authoritative expert because they are an expert and master in something else. People flock to them in social media because they are comfortable with the brand, the person or know of their accomplishments. Examples: @joelcomm, @guykawasaki, @jimmyfallon, @aplusk (Ashton Kutcher) or the Numa Numa Guy (he really could have done something with this mainstream popularity)
If you’re into search engine optimization or Internet Marketing you can liken this type to what is called PageRank. PageRank is essetinally a ranking number based on how many links a website has, making it an authority on the subject. Once again, these sites can just crap out content and have it rank well because the rest of their site already has a power authority that can not be obtained overnight.
Type Two: The Power User Expert
This second type of expert has successfully climbed the social mountain of one social media institution and can generally transfer this power over to other social networks. Once one mountain is conquered it’s invariably easier to conquer the next. You will often find these power users have established a network of die hards, fans or people that just think they are the next best thing since sliced bread. Sometimes the fascination relates to a sort of fame but just a more “geeky” type of fame. Most of the time these power users follow an extensive list of RSS feeds or favorite publications (sometimes ones they’re getting a payment from) and faithfully submit stuff that catches their eye or fills their wallet. Now hold up, don’t get all pissy with me, I’m not saying all these guys are paid, that is certainly not the case, some of the top ones aren’t paid a dime and I’m certain of it.
Now this second bit of explanation is going to hurt a little more, so bear with me. A lot of these types of experts claim they know something others do not, they have voodoo sauce or they are just that good. I say that’s just horse shit. What these users have done is played the numbers game. Remember that they conquered a mountain before many? They were early adopters and were able to amass insurmountable numbers that are hard to fathom outside of the Internet. With this following they also are adept at using cutting edge content finding tools, errr RSS readers and aggregators / insider contacts, and definitely do have a feel for content their minions will clamor over.
A large percent of these users don’t create much content, they just scour top headlines and feed the masses with what is already popular or what looks like it will be popular, good content eye-ballers.
Examples: @zaibatsu, @mrbabyman/Digg:MrBabyMan, @msaleem/Digg:msaleem (Muhammad does create his own content too), BadWithComputer, @LouieBaur/Digg:LouieBaur, @stejules
The last sentence above is the most important to me in defining the third type of social media expert.
Type Three: Content Creation Social Media Experts
The third type of social media expert is a studier of people, a voyeurist of social interactions, a trend follower and someone who knows how to work with stats, analytic programs and finding the correct timing and mechanisms to create and launch content tailored to the social world’s desires. This group of users are not famous and they are generally not power users but they still find a way to craft their content and get it recognized in the social media world. These users have either gained a respect extremely strong due to crafty social skills or have found a way to create effective content with mass appeal. An interesting example of someone who fits the crafty social skills model is a budding social media expert on Twitter. His name is Mark Murnahan @murnahan. What is interesting about Mark is that he’s not a power user but he still seems to harness the power of the retweet on Twitter. He is often ranked as one of the top retweeted people on Twitter but he maintains a fairly low follower count. This hints at a social media expert intelligence that is far deeper than controlling the masses but instead, effectively managing a tight nit group of users in a powerful way.
I have proven time and time again that I’m adept at creating content with mass appeal. For more stats please read my comment confession below. Sorry for the shameless self mention!
This type of social media expert can be a hybrid and obviously uses RSS feeds, top news headlines and great posts they have found to spread to the masses also. However, one of the unique parts of this type of social media user is that they do create content and aren’t just living off of everyone else’s content.
Examples: @murnahan, @webaddict, @mayhemstudios, @jessenewhart, @szetela, @fantomaster
Type Four: Natural Social Media Experts
This fourth type of social media expert is in a way becoming a new breed of social media expert due to Twitter and Facebook. This user isn’t really focused on finding specific content and directing people towards news, articles or content driven sites but basically exude the defined properties of a social butterfly. They are generally fuzzy, loveable, nice, supportive and helpful and nurturing. Now that probably sounds a little over the top and surely every item doesn’t fit them all but I hope you get the point. These people are like that little Tony Robbins sitting on your shoulder. They provide that feeling of ghusto when you need it or they give you a positive vibe when you’re on emtpy. These users have risen to the top because they have great personalities and are excellent people persons.
Examples: @AlohaArleen, @BuzzEdition, @MariSmith
Type Five: Social Media Salesman
This fifth type of social media expert doesn’t really care about participating socially and you can usually see that from their discussions. They’re often touting their next guru launch, recession eliminating product or some wonderful new voodoo product that will make you rich. These are pretty much just straight Internet Marketers. I am not saying they don’t create products of value, but not all of them do and it seems most of them feed off of each other. You’ll find them all talking about each other and stroking each others follower lists, email lists and they all speak about each other like Gods. It really gets quite old eventually. You can typically find these guys singing songs, pushing you towards squeeze pages or promising big convention parties that cost thousands of dollars. With that said, I’m not saying once again that they don’t sometimes put out valuable stuff, it’s just that this is their type of social media expertness. Just list building and hawking goods to be honest.
Examples: @masscontrolkern, @mikefilsaime, @ed_dale
This post was actually inspired by a blog post from Jay Fowler @silentjay74, a good Mixx buddy of mine. You can read his blog post titled – What makes you the “expert”. I can’t seem to reproduce the passion that this post sparked in me but what it really sparked was a social media confession. I’ll provide a quote of my comment in response to Jay’s blog post here:
Hey Jay, this is a really good post touching on a growing issue. Why this is a growing issue, I have no clue. It’s sort of like bullies in High School, if they’re ignored they die off, if they are talked about and lauded by others, they seem to grow into cult status.
A social media expert in my opinion is completely different than what everyone thinks one is and I would be slaughtered for all the rules everyone says you must follow to be an expert.
One constant drivel of information about “good social media” people is that they can NOT only submit their own content. I personally think this is just bullshit.
A true expert in my opinion would be someone who creates all their own content, whether it’s for a client or not and submit it into the social media world and gets top rankings and wide exposure every single time. This to me would prove a strong knowledge of what people want, what people like and what WORKS in social media.
On Digg I had 44 front pages and the big secret is, they were ALL my own content and blogs.
Same with Mixx, almost all of my populars / front pages were my own content. Now on Mixx I operate a little differently and will gladly submit content from friends I respect.
My original purpose was strictly for historical and analytical reasons. When I had a percentage rating of successful front pages on Digg that was a very PERSONAL number. When removing my early Digg experience my successful frontpage percentage of my own content was around 90% FP. I know of not one social media “expert” that can say the same.
I know I’ll be hated for revealing this “secret” but everyone is an idiot if they can’t look at my submission histories and see the reality on their own.
So this brings me to being a social media expert when you’re slinging around content from frontpage publications, major news media outlets and mainstream media productions… does that really make you an expert? I believe it does not. How hard is it to look at RSS feeds and headlines all day long and submit them and get a front page or mass syndication? Pretty damn easy if you ask me and any gerbil with a clicking finger can do it.
What makes a social media expert? Results. Period. That’s it.
Joel Mackey
- webaddictP.S. I operate on Twitter completely differently, I think it’s a very different animal and I use my credibility to RT posts and in effect I am putting my name behind those as well. It seems more purposeful to me to participate in the 2 way submission process.
Some will look at me in disgust and say how does your method equate to social? My method equates to social because I support good content, I constantly monitor the networks and vote or RT or Stumble content I feel is valuable. This does NOT mean you have to personally submit it. I feel bad because so many people will hate me and my view, but really, it doesn’t matter because they don’t have a clue what an expert is anyway.
Yes, you read that right, according to everyone’s Social Media Rules they often state, I just committed social media suicide. I revealed that all of my Front pages on Digg, Mixx and other sites were ALL content written by me and put on blog properties that I run. However, as I mentioned in the comment above, it’s just horse shit to say that you can’t be successful doing so. I also don’t believe this eliminates the social part of social media. What I really believe is that it shows an even more refined expertise that is not just slinging around mainstream media links or popular blog posts and submitting for a popular. Instead it takes a fine skill to study the trends and produce content that people want to vote for and pass around. Most social media experts you’ll find will state you can’t be successful if you self submit. Obviously that isn’t true so I’d really like to see this myth go to the dogs!
I personally believe that someone that can research a trend, create the content, syndicate that idea and generate successful exposure and reaction from the social media community has more skill than someone submitting twenty things a day they didn’t even write. One is like gambling, the other is a steady precision game that is focused on a particular goal. What do you think?
Well, there it is, practically a blog post all in itself. So let’s sum up all this information to a simple idea. If you find yourself being told by a social media expert how great they are and listening to their long winded theories, ask them or yourself this: Do you have results? Do you have proof of something going viral? Do you have frontpage data? Do you have traffic numbers or analytics proving the spread of your ideas and information? With the incredible growth of these “experts” most of them won’t have much. Their number of followers doesn’t mean a dang thing. If anything, you can guage their engagement values on Twitter by using a site like: www.twitalyzer.com Now if you’re looking at a user like Muhammad Saleem (msaleem) or Reg Saddler (zaibatsu) their value is undisputable and you don’t need to question whether you’re dealing with an expert. But some of these people are so far from experts it’s getting just silly to see their over inflated titles.
BOTTOM LINE: What is a social media expert? Proven results. See above for a more detailed explanation!

I gave you massive RT lvoe on this one even though you dissed my and my posse. That how I roll and believe it or not, we do rule the night.
Well, that’s that then.
The kettle is black, and the pot is black.
The spade is obviously a spade, and the fact of the matter is, we need to qualify what a social media expert is.
I would hazard that it is an expert on social media, not just someone with notoriety, correct?
That being said, celebrity is indeed its own virtue, and as you point out carries significant clout socially.
Frank Kerns points this out, and he would never claim to be a social media expert, nor would Mike Filsaime, though they are unquestionably experts in their respective fields.
So, who is a social media expert, and even more importantly, who cares?
I know plenty of experts in my field that are business flops, and unable to carry on an intelligent conversation.
I know novices in my field whom are far from experts that make well over $1,000,000 a month and have throngs of people gushing with respect for them.
So I have to wonder what is the real value of social media “expertise” anyway?
Maybe this is the wrong argument altogether.
Maybe we should be looking at who is expert enough to qualify expertise? LOL
Great article.
Many truths
Ron
This is a great post with some solid archetypal insights. I’m subscribed for more.
As a content creator type, I call the power users “button pushers” in my own lexicon. People who are really, really skilled a going through tons of feeds and constantly keeping relationships stoked with hundreds or thousands of people. I find it to be very wearing to deal with thousands of feeds and users in batches… but some people are naturals at it.
All these parts of the puzzle make up the social flow and all these people important! Including the fake experts who help people learn respect for the real experts you’ve listed.
Did you find what “results” would actually be if you had a “successful marketing campaign” on Twitter?
Then we can backtrack from that definition to evaluate all the experts.
And no fair saying “awareness reading” or “engagement with the brand”. I mean selling widgets.
@stejules You’re very welcome. You’re a social media rockstar in my mind.
@Zaibatsu Thank you Reg. Reg is obviously a stand up guy. I didn’t diss him too much, honestly, I bow down to his social media prowess. I really respect these guys, they’re truly what makes all the content you see fly by the screen. Thanks for being so neutral. You are the man.
@Ron Wow, great comment too! You certainly hit the nail on the head. It’s hard to decide who is expert enough to qualify expertise. This is just my opinion and I’m not really making claims, I have just had a view on the industry for a very long time. You’re definitely right Kern and Filsaime are experts in their “category” and that’s undisputable. I just needed people to put in the category that people could identify with.
I think the problem with defining an expert is that we can’t but I took a stab at the ones that were and tried to make a definition of the ones that are, at least in social media.
@Brett Borders Thanks for the compliment. I would have to stay away from the term, “button pushers” but it’s an interesting take on it. You are spot on that all parts needed but I never thought about the “fake experts” being needed. LOL, great point! People like Zaibatsu are definitely naturals at handling massive amounts of information – human computers.
@Prokofy Neva I didn’t specifically touch on only Twitter. The article was meant for the entire social media spectrum but I did only refer to users mostly through their Twitter / Digg profiles. I think you’re missing the point (but just a little). A “successful marketing campaign” is exactly what the client or creator designed it to be. So it could be awareness reading, engagement with the brand, visitors etc. Now if you’re looking at one aspect of social media success – selling widgets – there are some that do it effectively in the list above. Mike Filsaime just relaunched his Butterfly Marketing Campaign successfully and also utilized social media. Selling widgets is a big open pile of shit too, could be ad spots, consultations, sponsorships, interviews, free promotion, easy dates or simply selling something physical as it seems you are referencing, “selling widgets.” Thanks for your comment, good stuff!
Bloody good post, Joel.
Maybe one day you and I can qualify to get in these lists
Cheers,
-A
I’m not saying power users are ‘mindless; button pushers…. I could see how that could be totally misinterpreted as pejorative… but I’m referring to the sheer volume of clicks and connections some of my friends make on a constant basis:
Digg, Digg, Digg, Digg, Digg, Digg. Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow. RT, RT, RT, RT, RT. Shout, shout, Shout, Shout. Copy. copy. Copy. Paste. Paste. Paste. Pase. Approve. approve. Approve. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Block. Block. Block. Block.
The best power users have mad manual dexterity and multi-tasking skills. Almost trans-human reading comprehension and filtering skills.
I guess we all click a lot of buttons no matter what our type.
One guy who is really well-rounded in Maki @ DoshDosh. He’s all over your map – good at most of it – and doesn’t fit neatly into any of the stereotypes.
interesting read, joel. I’ve been observing, participating, working and consulting in web community since 1996. It ties into social media w/o the viral aspect, though it does apply.
I think the category “Nobody User who Knows It All” was left out. And file that nobody, @krystynchong right under it.
respectfully,
if you know me, you love me.
I’m glad this wasn’t another ” these are my Twitter rules for following” posts. Interesting whether you agree or not.
That’s the fun of social media, it takes all kinds of people to create a community. What if we all just posted our own stuff and never gave credit to others where credit was due? We’d all be sitting around listening to ourselves and reading our own stuff.
I love to create my own content, but must admit I’m very shy about sharing it for some reason. Therefore, I’m more of a social media chatter box. Once people get to know me, they seem to say “hey, I liked your post/video/etc. about _____ and I didn’t have to “toot my own horn” because it makes me nervous.
I also like to read A LOT and yes, I subscribe to many RSS feeds. That’s because I don’t know all there is to know by any stretch and I think that my followers would benefit because it’s related to what I talk about.
With this mix of sharing and discovering content and people who like to talk about the things I do, I find Twitter quite inspiring. When I see a particular subject or question on Twitter that I know I can add some of my own insights or opinions on, I’ll definitely have no problem posting my own stuff.
I’ve found so much great content, learned so much about many things, and met so many interesting characters because of the wacky mix of personalities tweeting their hearts out in all in their own ways.
Depending on a person’s goals, there is probably a perfect “expert” or “inspiration” for anyone wanting to make the most out of their experiences on the social web.
@web20empire
Interesting classification.
Did anybody else notice that this list is virtually-all-male?
Except of course for the “fuzzy, loveable, nice, supportive and helpful and nurturing” category, which is all women. Huh. What a coincidence.

It is true that social media is necessary in now a days, but i have seen that many peoples uses social media for abusing the websites.
Few peoples use SMM for promotion
I believe if social media interactivity can be good, but in some cases can be abused. Having a new social network site, we hope generate a good group for the purpose of sharing their goals in life, sharing their experiences and helping each other get through the challenges met along the path of success. The fun part of social interactivity you get to know people all over the world, making new friends, learning from them as they learn from yourself.
Joel,
Your article meets the R4 factor of a powerful article: Use the right words to name the right people to address the right topic at the right time.
Had this article not been so blatant in its approach, it might not have the same impact. My heart reaches out though to “The Power User Experts” who I felt got the raw deal. If nothing succeeds like success, then their follower base is enough evidence of their expertise. Their role in social media achieving the tipping point cannot be undermined. While some create others disseminate. They are the channel between the manufacturers and the consumers while being the biggest consumers themselves. I think its too early for disintermediation in the social media, dont you?
My congratulations for a highly engaging post.
Best,
Pramit
@Alister I really appreciate that. Thanks, soon you’ll be on the lists just keep pushing ahead.
@Brett Borders You would be correct not to term the power users as “mindless button pushers.” I was really only trying to raise hairs to discuss the issue. The Power Users are what makes social media news reach the masses in reality. I was being an ass when I made it seem so trivial with some of my comments. You definitely hit the point when you stated, “we ALL are clicking a lot of buttons.” Looking at a power users it’s incredibly more than click buttons, just trying to rattle some cages. Oh yeah, BTW, Maki – DoshDosh, top of the shelf and you’re right, hits most of the categories.
@Krystyn You got that right. With my slightly asinine post you would have thought I was saying any of the users I mentioned, including myself, might have all the answers. This was clearly not my point. The one category we ALL belong in is certainly, “NO user knows it ALL.”
@Sharon thanks, that was the point, to get people interested and thinking about the issue.
@Sheree web20empire You really make some great points in your comment. I hope you don’t believe my point is that everyone should submit all their own content. The wheel would grind to a halt at that point. The beauty of social news is that sharing, voting and commenting is a way of “submitting” your weight and credibility behind posts, submissions and content. My personal view is that most of the time this completes the circle. As I noted however, I view Twitter and Mixx differently and operate on a 2-way street. If you take note, you’ll see I’m rated as one of the top generous people on Twitter rated by Twitalyzer.com. I believe in sharing others content. With that said, you made an EXCELLENT point that for each and every person there is a different “type” of expert for that niche, passion or desires. I completely agree. Everyone is an expert in their own corner.
@jon Spot on! This shows an error in my analysis. I haven’t done a good job of finding the female contribution to the categories I presented. If anyone has any to add please send them to me on Twitter, in comment etc. We need more females to be represented outside of the Natural Social Media Experts.
@Patrick Thanks for reading, hope to have your complete comments later.
@Shailendra Not sure I’m getting what your point is or maybe I just don’t agree.
@Penny You’re spot on on that, the fun part of social media is you get to meet people from all over the world. I love this aspect and I’m constantly thrilled to meet people form parts of the globe I’d never get to experience.
@Pramit I think you hit the NAIL on the head. Really what I was trying to was wake people up out of their slumber and engage people. You’re exactly right with your explanation of “The Power User Experts” getting the raw deal. They don’t exactly deserve it because they do provide “the channel” as you put it. Your comment is above par and deserves to be features as exactly what this post is supposed to make happen, a DISCUSSION of the truths in social media. I don’t believe I am the one of truths but wanted to engage smart people as yourself to bring the value of all aspects of social media to the forefront. Thanks for your insightful post.
“While some create others disseminate.” – YES! So right, this is why honestly, as this post did not convey, I respect and honor the people I work with (power users). I apologize to everyone for the negative tone my post had. Sometimes I’m good at writing with mad passion but can make the facts fuzzy. That part quoted is extremely important.

Interesting categorization of the social media stew. Much thanks for sharing your perspective webaddict. Always look forward to enjoyable articles like this.
Joel,
First off, thanks for mentioning my post on Juicysnake. Second, Damn dude, this post blew mine out of the water. Looks like I did touch a creative spark in you. I know you said you were going to do a piece that resembled mine, but maaaaannnnn, you really dove into detail. Loved your post dude. I am just waiting for the day when the so-called experts realize they need to do one seriously important thing in Social Media, KEEP IT SOCIAL.
I see so much garbage traffic of people using Social Media to shout their own agenda, and it pisses me off.
I am less likely to click a link for someone who does not engage me or share content other than their own.
To many people think that because they have accounts on sites, that they are experts. To me that mentality is like telling people you are a web designer because you can copy a Myspace layout code on change a background.
Pfffffft.
Again brother, great post! See you on the field!

What genius. First you dis the ‘SM experts’ by giving them a virtual bitch slap and when they call you out on it you tell them it was a love tap. They believe you, forgive you, then tweet it all over the twitterverse. They are also among the believers of the ‘any publicity is good publicity’ adage. If that was your goal then you have met it with aplomb, and deserve many congratulations. I applaud your testicular fortitude.
Have a great day
Susanne
Great post. I was told a long time ago that if someone is an expert they do not need anyone to tell you they are their results will show it.
Unless I am mistaken saying, “Look at me I am an expert because of the followers I have”, does not make it so. It just shows they are very good at pushing the right buttons or are very successful in another arena.
Thanks

The Ornery Marketer
i’ve recently realised the term ‘Expert’ is of no value. Who decides if someone is an expert? can you decide yourself, or is it in the eye of the beholder?
I currently determine:
- experienced (you’ve ondergone something and have learnt from it first hand; could be usefull for someone else)
- interested (you like to be/keep yourself informed, but it’s not a must).
- professional (your experience is valuable enough for others to ask money for reusing it (in a new context)).
very much inspired by the guys from Winkwaves, who are amongst the thought leaders in the Netherlands.

Very good post and good summary of the types of users. It’s amazing how with every new revolution, comes a new kind of spam.
This list definitely highlights a few thing that I do not want to become.
There are way too many so called expert life coaches, internet marketers and social media experts who are peddling low grade silicone snake oil to the gullible masses and taking them to the cleaners – resulting in a situation where many people view internet marketers as a bunch of spamming a’holes who add no real value to the conversation.
These are the kinds of people that make me want to remove the words seo, internet marketing and entrepreneur from all my profiles because of the bad vibe they create.
Yes this is funny. Just like any other filed there are always “experts” that get trodded out to show their lack of depth and knowledge.
Forgot one type:
The pretentious fools who don’t realize that New Social Media is just the same as the old BBS’s, forums and old media with better technology.
Mahalo.
Just another reason I will not refer to myself as an “expert”. Social media is constantly evolving and I really think all anyone can do is learn as much as they can and share that knowledge with those who don’t know it already. If you can make a living off of teaching what you know to others, more power to you.
Your right. Everybody is an expert when it comes to social media marketing. It’s too bad there is not a standard certification or test one could do to separate crap social media firm from good ones. Great Post.. Keep em comming!
This is a great overview of the different kinds of participants on sites like Twitter.
However, I think you’re confusing “expert” and “participant” — think “coach” vs “player”. An expert is someone who studies an activity and advises people on it; a participant is someone who is involved in it. The two require entirely different sets of skills, though sometimes you might find both sets in the same person. Think of it this way: does every baseball MVP automatically make a good coach, and does every good coach have to have once been an MVP?
I agree that most so-called social media experts are full of BS (after all, “social media” is a BS term in the first place), but you can’t assume that being a top-100 Tweeter makes you an expert on Twitter, any more than being an expert on Twitter would make you a top-100 Tweeter.
[...] OpenPressWire recently posted a really comprehensive post on 5 kinds of actual social media experts. By profiling these 5 types of social media savants, the post really helps you separate the actual [...]
Thanks for the delineation. I always thought ‘social media’ expert just meant poseur/climber/salesman/braggart/charlatan/web addict. Now I know the difference! Thanks for setting me straight, seriously.
I’m a social media swimmer.
Nice post, well worth the read.
Only time I’ve been accused of being an expert is when a client is mad at me. The accusation that I knew what I was doing hurt more than whatever they were pissed about.
Good read, but I have to say is anyone surprised that people are quick to make claims within the Social platforms of their expertise? Is this any different than someone who is excessively bold in the language of their resume or cover letter?
Perhaps I am being naive but it seems rather obvious to see the flowers from the weeds, and frankly even when I do on a platform like Twitter, I will still play with both entities to see what they are really about.
It is generally apparanent to me though in just spending a few months on Twitter and engaging more in the last six weeks that people who say who they are rather than what they are experts in are more informative and helpful, vs. information spam.
Those who throw the ‘expert’ term around in a growing field is wrong. Social media is understood best by those who understand marketing, communication, group psychology, and web technology. There are very few of these people in existence.
1st time to your site- and I like it!
In my eyes, an expert is not a know-it-all. In social media (and MOST other fields) there is no end point of knowing it all.
This is generally the criteria I use to determine “expertise”
- Do they walk the talk? Have a blog? Get comments? Followers? Community? Speak on the topic? Content?
- Do their clients and colleagues respect them as such?
- Do they keep up with the trends? (Staying on the cutting edge = expert).
I’d also add that there are some who have cross over appeal – especially 3 and 4. Those who create content and community.
I think I sense another post. = )
I’ve always enjoyed making fun of those that have to put expert in their bio – in the real world, it’s always a red flag to see that type of pitch… or the need to pitch it! Thanks for the honest article:)

Just wondering how did the issue of who is and who is not an expert raise the eyebrows? Is it because there are too many already sharing the glory that should have been only for the ‘prestigious few’?
I do not even make it into the ‘social media’ tag, so the ‘expert’ one is out of the question, but wearing the shoes of all those who are trying to ‘climb the ladder’ as they are described – once again resurrecting those hierarchical structures that take the few into unreachable spheres for the vast majority – I wonder what is the necessity to humiliate others in order to stress differences for ‘sacred cows’.
Perhaps some think that it is a way to ‘teach’ others what is worth it and what is not, but then again that implies underestimating the capacity of people to discern who creates and who is a follower and who is just hanging into someone else’s fifteen minutes of ‘glory’.
Thanks for your article.
The phrase “a tight nit group of users” in Type Three gave me a bit of a chuckle from the mental image it created of a closely-connected posse of louse eggs hanging out together in a bad hairdo, lol. And while in the given context this is not completely without merit as a description, I think you meant a “tightly-knit group.”
That said, great article. Lots of stuff to chew on, thanks!

Is Quality content Providers experts. Well if the craft yes maybe because they understand that by providing quality content is waht we all want for the internet, and I mean creators of content like Google , Facebook and MySpace. These are the experts as there numbers show. Everyone else is just trying to learn what these guys are doing,. Copy cat schemes seldom have the same impact.

I want to retweet this but I think you should think about two things, because this is a superb piece of research and I don’t want anything to detract from its success.
Run the story through a spellchecker, there are a lot of spelling errors, like “essential” in one of the first few paragraphs. Second, I think you should delete yourself from the story. Let readers decide for themselves where you fit.

I have to say that the numbers don’t always lean to the big fish. I’m just a little old nobody who just tweets a lot. And I’ve managed to rank myself in some pretty nice grouping with people who have 10x the amount of followers. Doesn’t mean that I haven’t worked hard and finding content that others don’t.
Any idiot can wait for their RSS feed to refresh or go to popurls to find some content…. it takes a true dumpster diver to fish out the goods.
I’m a definite Type 3 kind of guy. I could start rocking out stats that would make people cry. The only reason I rank so high in any ‘grading’ is because one fundamental guide… and that’s just to have a little bit of fun….

Interesting post. I’ll add that I think it is probably misleading to take the stance that social media is primarily about information and then try to categorize experts in terms of the kinds of information they propagate. I think of these categories mostly as preferences for particular styles of social networking rather than kinds of expertise.
There is actually very little original information generated in social media networking if you analyze the content of messages. There’s lots of energy, but most of it is taking the same couple of messages and propagating them through the network, to evolve in various ways. People’s real life expertise rarely ends up in social media because of the limitations of the channels designed for attention rather than structured substance.
For example, people have often argued that “Twitter” is a good medium for dialog. But when you look closely, what they mean by dialog is really just people exchanging snippets and phases. It is almost purely a gossip medium, with information thrown in here and there as spice. It involves fast thinking and lots of energy but not much structured information at all. If you’re lucky, some people will include pointers to something substantive in their phrases.
Our species is entranced and engaged by gossip and lives largely through social imitation and contagion, so we tend to equate popularity with expertise. Social media expertise essentially equates to expertise at becoming popular through online technology.
So while I like these categories seem largely superfluous to me as capturing “social media expertise” That’s just a matter of how good you are at getting attention using technology, which is technological marketing. Or writing about the theory of same.
The rest of the category system sems to me to be a nice way of stating preferences for where we think the juicy gossip or the good information might be coming from.

A few women on Twitter I see as social media experts: @PRSarahEvans of #journchat, @WomenWhoTech, @digitalsista, @blogdiva, @HumanFolly, @sairy, @ch3ryl, @MyrnaTheMinx, @PunditMom, @GloPan, @maegancarberry, @MediaLizzy, @pinkelephantpun, @nansen, @McCainBloggette, @CharleneLi, and @zephoria.
Others?
The only true expert in this game is one who can connect authentically with others. That’s where this path should be leading us. Pushing other people’s information around the web, as a social media business plan, has no value. It’s just one big circle jerk and I cant bare to watch it any more.
Tell me who you are, what you value, your hopes and fears. Say something that makes me question my assumptions and expand my respect for others individuality. Let me know you well, that I may better know myself.
A) Your title is PERFECTION! Brief, Grabs, Humorous!
B) Your “Schpeel” is well written with examples (which are arguable for controversial appeal), simply laid out, and great humor!
C) I agree with Joel above (@webaddict on Twitter) It’s about RESULTS!
Keep in mind that often results for a job well done is not seen! Belinda the “Good Witch” can wave her Social Media Wand and change the entire course of a conversation, schoold of thought, or buying pattern…

Great article full of passion and ranting. One area not covered with these experts was the follow-follow back debate. The big part of making an expert in social media is being social. I think that there really are two categories depending on what you want.
1. Social media expert PROVIDER. These are the ones that have their fingers on a lot of very good information and share it with us. They probably don’t follow back because :
a) They figure that they know more than us so we have nothing to offer.
b) They are WAAAY too busy harvesting information to put out to talk to anybody.
c) It’s an ego thing.
2. Social media expert INTERACTER. These are the ones that not only have their fingers on very good information that they share with us but they actively engage themselves with their followers. They usually follow everybody back because:
a) They understand that being social is all about connecting with people, not just information.
b) They find more information in their stream as well as the web.
c) They like people.
Social Media Expert side note that may influence how you think.
As I write this;
John McCain follows 40 people & has 354,075 followers
BarackObama follows 591,188 people & has 699,419 followers
Now when President Obama hit the Senate floor and everyone was tweeting away no doubt somebody from his team was watching his stream. Maybe someone from Senator McCain’s was watching his trickle.
Which one had a better pulse on how the nation was feeling?
Which one has access to more information directly from the public, without even talking to them?
Which one has taken a social media tool and turned it into a “ticker-tape” of public opinion and information?
Something to think about, isn’t it?

This is a good piece of thoughtful writing, Joel. I don’t fit into any of your categories, as I couldn’t find one for aging technology professionals who have a half-clue more clue than the person in the next cubicle.
Seriously, where’s the category for the people who just dig using social media tools to stay ahead of their clients, underlings, and competition? There are plenty of people who might be called a social media expert is because they have more practical experience than the other people in the room. When you look on Twitter, it’s the guy with 30,000 followers who’s the expert, but look almost anyplace else and it’s the one person in the room who actually uses Twitter.
The trouble with this sort of analysis is that we’ve already seen the veil lifted, and we all know that if you can group all of the social media experts into big targets and hit them all with one carefully designed shot, you’re bound to get a reaction that generates a response, thus validating your credibility among them. I’m saddened to see the online community that I have appreciated for so many years decorated with too much cleverness and too little heart. Fortunately there are still places in the social media landscape that are unspoiled by marketeering. I’ll not reveal their name or place to preserve them.

Fantastic post. Completely agree.
What i think is funny is hearing experts saying they have 20k views on youtube and a 15 yr old kid has a series from his bedroom with over 1 million and they dont claim to be experts.
Great read
“These users have risen to the top because they have great personalities and are excellent people persons.”
I know for a fact that’s not the reason at least one of those people has the number of followers on Twitter that they do.
It’s easy, and few of these articles about Twitter discuss it.
1) Follow as many people as you can
1a) Follow people who follow spam accounts – they’re sure to follow back
2) Wait for them to follow you back
3) Unfollow anyone who doesn’t follow you back after a day or so
3a) Unfollow people following you if you think they won’t notice
Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Use automated tools like Twollow and Twitter Karma to make it easier for yourself.
The real trick is that some of the people that look like they’re following roughly the same # of people as the ones who follow them? They’re following a different set of people, waiting for the follow back. Having similar figures makes people think they’re a reciprocal Twitter follower… but they’re not.
It’s all automated. You can pull 3,000 people a week with minimal effort, so it’s not surprising to see people with 50K+ followers now.
Any sort of quality judgement based on the # of users someone has following them on Twitter is deeply, deeply flawed. It doesn’t mean you’re a social media expert – it means you’ve found a tool/system that will generate a lot of followers… and that’s it.
The best thing I’ve read in a long time… Depressingly accurate, but God it’s good.
The only thing you have sadly missed is the Conference circuit… Because anybody who pays for an inner page ad in PR News is clearly a qualified social media expert to sit on a panel at the latest “How YOU can Become a Social Media Expert.. Joel,
I can’t remember when I’ve read a blog post that I’ve enjoyed more. I’m so sick of people touting themselves as “social media experts” that I want to barf every time I hear the phrase. Like a commentor above, I believe that if you are truly an expert, you need not proclaim to people your prowess – it will be obvious. My experience with many so-called experts is that they’re ego-driven folks with swelled heads who forget that social media is about being social. That means providing content (original is always better)sharing ideas and relevant information, as well as engaging, socializing and possibly even teaching.
I love your no bullshit attitude and tell-it-like-it-demeanor. I’m sure that often causes you to ruffle a feather or two, but it makes me like and respect you all the more.

Ha – what a h00t of a post, Joel!! Quite the rant, but yes for the most part there’s a lot of truth to the whole bandwagon thing… which makes me a wee bit concerned.
I’m all for people getting out there to help other peeps and there’s a vast range of experience and skill level. Those starting can certainly help others who are even newer to the social media game.
What worries me though, is when there is a distinct lack of knowledge about best practices, etiquette, proven strategies, reputation management, tracking and monitoring results… the list goes on. Not only that, but to know that social media is just one piece of the marketing pie, not the whole enchilada. (oops, mixing my food metaphors here. lol).
In any case, in all honesty, I am grateful to see my name on the Type 4 list – Natural Social Media Experts. Yep social butterflies are us. (And I’m a big Tony Robbins fan too!)
For those who’ve read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, I am a natural born Connector. I live for my peeps. I love to help the world … and I especially love to empower people using social media to fully appreciate how much of a difference we can make individually and collectively. You never know how much even one tweet can impact someone’s life. Aaah, there I go evangelizing my Tony Robbins style. LOL.
But, here’s the thing – when you are doing what you absolutely LOVE with a passion, in fully integrity, with full authenticity, and you have other people’s BEST interests at heart, you cannot help but succeed wildly.
Cheers

Still I agree with the article, totally bored of the self proclaimed gurus, and work at home moms, and affiliate marketers etc etc etc.
It’s certainly true, what is in this article, unfortunately, like traditional media, it is focused on the drama of all the hacks claiming to be social media experts. Of course there are those that weren’t mentioned: actual social media practitioners. These folks have been using social media as a promotional channel for brand communications and promotions since before the term social media existed. Yes Sally, there was social media before MySpace. It was called forums, newsgroups, email.
It has been frustrating for someone who has spent almost 15 years doing this, that everyone with a Twitter account and a Facebook fan page for their company talking about “the conversation” is claiming to be an expert. Hell, I’ve been using Photoshop that long and don’t consider myself an expert, and that’s only software, not the amalgamation of user behavior, communication, marketing, and technology.
It’s almost laughable when a 20-something fresh out of University tries to talk me to school about how social media should be used, that they believe that word of mouth is anti-democratic, and that it’s not a marketers job to sell their brand’s services and product. Ah, the innocence of youth!
Show me someone with a few major case studies behind them showing REAL ROI, and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t consider themselves an expert, but is on their way there.

I commend you on your in depth analysis of what makes and doesn’t make a social media expert. I totally agree on a number of points and agree that the term “expert” is so often abused and misused by people retweeting or copying and pasting other people’s content and passing it off as their own.
With the landscape of social media changing so quickly and new tools being developed everyday, it’s basically the blind leading the blind. Hopefully there will be some standard or certification eventually, but who would make it? What would determine whether you passed or failed?

Just wondering how did the issue of who is and who is not an expert raise the eyebrows? Is it because there are too many already sharing the glory that should have been only for the ‘prestigious few’?
I do not even make it into the ’social media’ tag, so the ‘expert’ one is out of the question, but wearing the shoes of all those who are trying to ‘climb the ladder’ as they are described – once again resurrecting those hierarchical structures that take the few into unreachable spheres for the vast majority – I wonder what is the necessity to humiliate others in order to stress differences for ’sacred cows’.Perhaps some think that it is a way to ‘teach’ others what is worth it and what is not, but then again that implies underestimating the capacity of people to discern who creates and who is a follower and who is just hanging into someone ales fifteen minutes of ‘glory’.
Thanks for your article.

Today is the first time I’ve seen your blog, and this post was the first one I’ve seen. Based on the rant on this page, I really have to come back here more often. All I can say is, “Amen!”
The people that sell these courses on how to be a “______ expert/guru” (you fill in the blank) know for a fact that the vast majority of the people to whom they sell their program won’t make it and will simply fall by the wayside. Either they will simply not do what is required, or they will miserably fail because the honest truth is that you really have to be an expert, and not just pretend to be one. Unfortunately, that truth never makes it into any of the sales materials of the snake-oil salesman selling their wares (such as your examples above).
It’s a tough world we live in!

It’s all about the benjamins – getting sales leads and converting them – keep preaching this to my clients but hell some of them are still buying printed yellow pages ads.
I guess you have to be a real social climber in real life to convert that on to the social platforms. I have yet to find a way to do it.

interesting read, joel. I’ve been observing, participating, working and consulting in web community since 1996. It ties into social media w/o the viral aspect, though it does apply.
Want to thank you for interesting content dude. Keep writing
